Mike writes - Owning an MG and particularly a B Roadster was a dream I held on to for nigh on 40 years.
I had to as I couldn't afford one in my youth and once the family arrived there was no chance. However my mid life crisis resulted in my foolish idea to buy two MG's, one good, one bad, to make a really good one out of the two.
In 1998 the deed was done and a totally broken B was delivered for me to strip and preserve as many bits as possible. This took a while and then there was much cleaning and painting to do, at the same time as building up a variety of parts which would be needed along the way.
Then came the good B.
This was a 1966 body which had been imported from California, whence it was originally exported to in july '66.
The task of rubbing the whole thing down was daunting and the thought of rebuilding it was even more daunting. Having played with old bangers for most of my teens and twenties, how hard could it be?
Quite a bit of work was done, when I foolishly moved the engine block from stand to floor and damaged my back. This put paid to me rebuilding it and after it languished in the garage for 4 years I finally plucked up courage to return to where the cars were purchased, Murray Scott Nelson in Scarboro.
The estimate for rebuild seemed reasonable at the time, but the bill on completion was almost twice the estimate. Still haven't really got over it. We visited occasionally to see how the restoration was going. Early on in the exercise I was asked what colour I wanted to paint it. I didn't want Red, nor did I want Racing Green, so I was undecided. Paint it pale Primrose came the cry from the workshop, it will be stunning. Mmm I thought, not really my cup of tea, but I was persuaded that it would be alright on the night.
And of course they were right, the end product is stunning and not a colour thats seen very often.
Needless to say the result is many happy hours travelling in style.
